Mumbai Heavy Rainfall Disrupts City Life as Subways Flood, Transport Systems Stall, and IMD Issues Weather Alerts

Mumbai experienced severe disruption due to continuous heavy rainfall, causing widespread waterlogging, closure of Andheri Subway, suspension of Trans-Harbour railway services, traffic congestion on major highways, and tree fall incidents. The IMD issued Red and Orange alerts as civic authorities responded to rising monsoon risks across the city.

Mumbai witnessed intense disruption as relentless monsoon showers intensified across the metropolitan region, leading to severe waterlogging, transport paralysis in key stretches, and emergency responses from civic authorities and disaster management teams. Continuous heavy rainfall from Tuesday night into Wednesday early morning submerged several low-lying areas and severely impacted daily life across the city.

One of the most critical incidents occurred at the Andheri Subway, which was temporarily closed to vehicular movement due to extreme water accumulation. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed officials on-site to prevent vehicles from entering the flooded underpass as conditions became hazardous. BMC officer Ritik reported that no immediate temporary solution was available to resolve the flooding issue. He added that personnel remained stationed at the location to restrict entry, yet some drivers continued to take dangerous risks. According to him, an auto rickshaw driver became stranded in the middle of the submerged subway and was rescued safely by two BMC workers who entered the water, preventing a potentially fatal outcome.

The impact of rainfall was not limited to Andheri. Multiple underpasses and roads across the city experienced severe waterlogging, forcing closures and restricting movement. The Eastern Express Highway saw slow-moving traffic as vehicles navigated flooded stretches with reduced visibility and slippery road conditions. In the Sion area, children and teenagers were observed enjoying the rain despite official advisories urging caution under such hazardous conditions.

Rainfall data highlighted the severity of the situation. According to BMC records, between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. on June 23, Mumbai city recorded an average of 56 mm rainfall, while the eastern suburbs received 23 mm and the western suburbs 33 mm. The intensity increased overnight. From 8 a.m. on June 23 to 2 a.m. on June 24, Mumbai city recorded 78 mm rainfall, eastern suburbs 87 mm, and western suburbs 113 mm, indicating significantly higher impact in the western suburban belt.

Between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., localized heavy rainfall was recorded across multiple western suburb locations, including 32 mm at Charcop Sector 1 Municipal School in Kandivali, 28 mm at MHB Municipal School in Malad, 26 mm at the Gajdharband Storm Water Pumping Station, 22 mm at Juhu Dispensary and Banana Leaf area, and 21 mm at Narialwadi School in Santacruz. Further, between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., Bhandup Complex in the eastern suburbs recorded 40 mm rainfall, while Anand Nagar Municipal School area in the western suburbs recorded 32 mm.

Public transport services were significantly affected. Suburban train operations on the Trans-Harbour Line were temporarily suspended after soil beneath the tracks was washed away between Turbhe and Kopar Khairane stations, rendering both up and down lines unsafe for movement. The Central Railway halted services on this section and initiated immediate repair and restoration work, advising passengers to use alternative transport options.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus network also faced disruptions, with several routes diverted due to submerged roads. Commuters were advised to check real-time updates through official channels before travel.

In another incident near Dadar Station on the eastern side, a tree fell onto a parked car, causing severe damage to the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Fire brigade personnel reached the site promptly and began clearing the fallen tree.

The BMC confirmed that apart from Andheri Subway, most other subways remained operational and suburban railway services on major lines were functioning normally, although conditions remained highly dynamic due to continuing rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, its suburbs, and Palghar. Later, in a morning nowcast issued at 7 a.m., an Orange Warning was declared for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg for the next three hours, forecasting moderate to intense rainfall. The IMD also warned of strong winds reaching speeds of 41 to 61 kilometers per hour, along with thunderstorms and continued rain activity. Thane district remained under an Orange Alert, while Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg were placed under a Yellow Alert.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas, and strictly follow official advisories as the city remains vulnerable to rapidly changing weather conditions.

The situation underscores the recurring vulnerability of Mumbai’s urban infrastructure during intense monsoon spells, as transportation networks, drainage systems, and public safety mechanisms face simultaneous strain under extreme rainfall conditions.
